Bible Translation and Church Interpreting: Challenges and Synergies

September 7, 2015 to September 11, 2015San Pellegrino University Campus Interactive symposium near Rimini, Italy, organised by the Nida Institute.

The Nida School of Bible Translation announces an interactive symposium on Church Interpreting and Bible Translation: Challenges and Synergies, to be held September 7-11, 2015 at the San Pellegrino University Foundation campus in Misano Adriatico (Rimini), Italy.

With the continued rise in human migration, more and more churches are responding to their multilingual and multicultural environments by providing some form of spoken or signed language interpreting. Embedded within church interpreting is the practice of spontaneously rendering Scripture into other languages, whether in the course of sermons and conference addresses, or in such situations as mediated Bible Storying and Scripture retellings. In many areas the practice occurs during the Bible reading phase of church services, even where a print translation exists in the target language. Yet the interface between Bible translation and church interpreting activities remains an uncharted area.

This interactive symposium will offer a stimulating environment for exploration of the theoretical and practical impact of interlingual church interpreting on Bible translation and Scripture engagement, particularly in relation to the live performance of Scripture. Built around guided group discussions and practice- oriented plenary sessions, it will be led by researchers and practitioners from both Bible translation and church interpreting. The topic is of potentially crucial relevance to anyone working in the areas of Bible translation, biblical performance criticism, church interpreting, cross-cultural hermeneutics, orality studies and Scripture engagement in multilingual situations and/or primary oral cultures.
